White-bellied Sea Eagle

White-bellied sea eagles over Sundarbans creeks — identification, behaviour, and raptor neighbours.

Last updated

Haliaeetus leucogaster · IUCN Least Concern

Haliaeetus leucogaster is the flagship raptor of brackish India — a fish eagle that nests in tall mangroves and hunts where freshwater meets the bay. From a boat, adults lifting from a snag are one of the easiest “wow” moments that does not depend on tiger luck.

Where to watch

Scan open bends and dead timber on routes toward Sajnekhali and Sudhanyakhali. Pakhiralay village mornings reward birders with eagles, kites, and kingfishers when forest boats are not yet loud.

Bring binoculars (8×42 is fine). Telephoto from a stable seat beats leaning over the rail.

Raptors you will hear named

Reserve education lists brahminy kite, osprey, shikra, crested serpent eagle, short-toed eagle, and occasional oriented honey buzzard. Each fills a different perch height and prey niche — the Sundarbans sky is layered, not empty.

Ethics

Do not play recorded calls near nests. Flash sparingly. Winter (Nov–Feb) stacks migratory waders and raptors on top of residents — see wildlife overview.

Brahminy kite, osprey, shikra, crested serpent eagle, and short-toed eagle are commonly listed for the Sundarbans. Oriental honey buzzard appears occasionally.
